The part is made from rectangular steel bar stock with multiple holes coming in from four different directions.  The particular problem we faced was drilling a precision hole all the way through the length of the part fast enough to keep up with all the other machining operations.

The Jost Solution was inventive if not divinely inspired.  We broke up the operations to start on one end and progressively use different tools around a rotary index table to machine a completed part every few seconds.  That’s how you make holey steel...fast!

Bolt Circle Drilling

Many manufacturers’ products have bolt circle designs.  This part is from a family of parts with four common bolt circle design.  Our customer needed a flexible process to drill different hole sizes and different bolt circle diameters.

We discussed the possibility of drilling these holes on a lathe, but it didn’t have the capability.  A new CNC lathe could do it all, but it would require a substantial investment.  Our customer was looking for a cost effective solution that was faster than a new CNC lathe.

The Jost Solution was a flexible design that could easily changeover for different hole sizes and bolt circle diameters...it produces quality holes, quickly, and below budget!

Casting Crying Out for a Special Machine

The machining operations were simple…yet complex.

Simple because they were conventional drilling and tapping operations at right angles to each other.

Complex because they had to be machined in sequence to close tolerances at a high rate of production.

The parts could be machined on a variety of older machines, but production required investment in faster and more accurate machinery.

The JOST SOLUTION dramatically increased the production rate, improved product quality, with only one (1) operator.

Automotive Drilling and Tapping

Transient

This casting required close center drilling and tapping operations on a high volume automotive casting.  Some of the drills were very deep to connect intersecting holes.  The drilling operation was required to remove flash and taper.

The Jost Solution combined similar machining operations using preset cutting tools in multiple spindle heads.  Our drilling and tapping components were also clustered together to complete the part in the fewest number of stations possible to save time, handling and money.
